What’s Interesting in the Weightlifting World?

I have not competed for a long time, but I follow sports life. And there is so much inspiration going on! Judge for yourself.

Oleksandr Usyk Took Several Championship Belts in the Heavyweight Division to Ukraine.

On September 25, 2021, the Ukrainian heavyweight boxer Oleksandr Usyk defeated British boxer Anthony Joshua in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London by decision of the judges and took his champion belts:

  • The World Boxing Association (WBA)
  • International Boxing Federation (IBF)
  • World Boxing Organization (WBO)
  • International Boxing Organization (IBO).

What does weightlifting have to do with boxing? Two years before this fight, the team of Oleksander Usyk introduced weightlifting training into their current training schedule. It helps to pump the explosive power of the legs, from which the punch is charged. The stronger the impulse from the legs, the harder the punch. I didn’t believe it myself until I tried it in a joint training session with Oleksandr:

It’s a pity, we didn’t guess then to measure his signature “Cossack” split jump. I’m sure he is jumping higher now even after fighting 12 rounds.

100-Year-Old Lifter Holds With New Records

Edith Murway-Train from Tampa (Florida, USA) this year celebrated her 100th anniversary and recently set a Guinness World Record for the oldest competitive powerlifter. The former dance teacher came to the gym at 91, was inspired by the work of powerlifters and started a new hobby.

In the video, she is 97 years old performing at regular competitions. Edith deadlifts 165 pounds and bench presses 65 pounds. In November, the grandmother threatens to surprise with new records. “She just loves to be applauded,” says her daughter.

Of course, powerlifting is not weightlifting. But I can’t pay attention to such inspiring real-life barbell examples.
